Modern Operating Systems
Just finished reading this. Think of it as the updated Minix book but with less focus on Minix (and its source code), more on other operating systems. It is a bit outdated, but that is to be expected for a practical book about operating systems (at the time of its writing, the latest Microsoft operating system, described in the book, was Windows 8 and the latest Apple operating system was OSX). One of the main points in the book is that history tends to repeat itself in technology, so who knows, maybe some of the "outdated" but clean and simple theory could suddenly have applications in the future. I'm sure some of the older readers will have experienced this cycle of technology first hand... Also, I love the chapter on security and reading about the (I assume fictional!) character Virgil and his elite computing skills.
